Sparks fly as Steel clashes with Steel

SSB Steelers Wheelchair Basketball Club had an unusual start to their season with a ‘Steel v Steel’ first game, as last season’s Division 1 North winners Steelers ‘A’ played the newly promoted Steelers ‘B’ team, winners of last season’s Division 2.

Despite being fellow ‘club mates’, there was a healthy rivalry between the squads with Steelers ‘A’ notching up the first couple of baskets.  Steelers ‘B’ were undeterred and with determined spirit fought back basket for basket to end the first quarter level pegging.

The lead continued to change hands through the second quarter, with Steelers ‘B’ edging ahead aided by a three point shot from Harry Brown, for a half time score of 24 v 27 to the Steelers ‘B’.

Not to be out performed, Steelers ‘A’ forged back the lead, with solid defensive team work and an inspired three point shot from Jessica Pilkington to edge into the lead.

With GB Junior International, Harry Brown fouled out of the game part way through the third quarter, the Steelers ‘B’ squad, spurred on by a fiercely supportive crowd, rose to the occasion and continued to pile on the pressure.

Steeler’s ‘B’ Coach, Maurice Hammerton, was no stranger at being the underdog, and rallied his squad.  The tenacity of the young team showed a maturity that belied their ages, as they battled to go five points ahead into the final minute.

Steelers ‘A’ kept their cool and clawed back three points, just running out of time to finish the game Steelers ‘A’ 48 v Steelers ‘B’ 50, showing the making’s for a thrilling return game as the teams clash again on Sunday 26th September.
