Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball in Canada
The in Sheffield well established wheelchair basketball club sent 21 athletes and fans to the most prestigious club tournament in the world earlier this month. The trip was planned for a while and all participants were busy in raising money to fulfill a rare opportunity and fantastic experience. 2 teams were entered in two different divisions, playing alongside national teams from Canada, Mexico, USA and Great Britain. The youngest athlete Sultan Al-Esayi, 15 years old, who has cerebral palsy said after the week: “This is the best thing I have ever done in my life”. The youngster started playing 5 years ago and only recently started making his own baskets, and was happy to contribute points in Toronto, Canada. The group going out was a mixture of ex GB representatives, GB juniors and players who only recently started the sport. Apart from playing in the 4 day tournament, the Sheffield Steelers also experienced Major League Baseball, Toronto CN tower and a trip to the Niagara Falls. For most, it was the first time over the big atlantic.
