Sheffield Steelers on winning streak both home and away

Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball Club’s second division team had a triumphant weekend following games at home and in Wales.

On Saturday (24th) the Steelers travelled to Wales to take on the Celtic Warriors on their home turf, twice  – their scheduled match earlier in the year having been delayed due to  snow. Despite the Warriors’ impressive strength and experience, the first match saw the Steelers’ come away with a comfortable victory. A confident first quarter set the tone for the match and the Steelers'  speed and agility proved too much, running out easy winners 55-23. Harry Brown led in scoring with 17 points, assisted by Manja Wolfram with 12, Joe Caudwell with 11 and Maddie Thompson with 8.

The second meeting of the day kicked off with some early foul trouble, but the Steelers put in a solid performance against the Warriors and, once again, stormed to victory 56:37. Joe Caudwell, continuing his excellent run for the day, scored a superb 18 points whilst Manja Wolfram added a further 10. The Warriors defence gave easy pickings for the Steelers; Jack Waring picked up a further 4 points, GB junior Mark Schofield – who was in great shooting form – 12 points, Harry Brown 10 and Maddie Thompson rounding off the scoring with 2 points. Their Welsh success represented the 10th  straight league win for the Steelers this season.

Still buoyant from their previous day's wins the Steelers headed to their home court to play old foes the Manchester Mavericks on Sunday (25th) . Joe Caudwell was once again on top form and the Mavericks had no answer to his inside game which gained him a 30 points haul. Manja Wolfram also had a great game with 16 points whilst Jack Waring contributed a further 10. Not to be out done, the guards also scored heavily with Harry Brown hitting 18, Maddie Thompson 4 and Mark Schofield 2.

The 80:32 result completed the perfect league season for the Steelers and ensured they remain unbeaten as they go into the end of season play offs on the 15th and 16th May at the Institute of Sport where they will take on two South Division teams and hope to win the overall league.
