SSB Steelers Juniors National Champions
Once again we are coming to the end of a season. While there are still a few national league games to be played for several SSB Steelers Teams, the Under 19's competed today in the Junior play offs at the EIS Sheffield.
The strong team went into the finals as one of the favorites and did not disappoint their fans. With 16 year old point guard Harry Brown, who just has been to a tournament to Italy with the GB men, the youngsters were led to 3 wins against MK Aces, Scorpions and Bury Bombers from the Southern League. All SSB team members had valuable court time and the crowd saw strong performances from Brown, Maddie Thompson (also GB women) and newcomer Joe Williams. But just to name a few doesn't serve the team justice. Forwards Jack Waring and 13 year old Chris Rainforth played well and contributed importantly in baskets and defence play. Guards Mark Scholefield, Sultan Al-Esayi and Damien worked very hard up and down the court and helped the team with points, assists, curls and pick and rolls. This is, what makes a great team. Joined effort, trust and team play mark the game of SSB Steelers Juniors.
Despite some questionable calls of fouls, players kept their heads together, played on and showed again a new level to the junior game.
The British Wheelchair Basketball Junior league has grown in past years from 9 to 28 teams in the country. The game events are a pleasure to watch and in particular prior to the Paralympic Games next year gives much hope of new talent coming through and very passionate young kids, who simply are an inspiration.
SSB Steelers are keen to recruit more youngsters to continue the present success. The club is open to everybody, so whoever (no matter age or gender) wants to give a go to Wheelchair Basketball, come to one of our open sessions on a Tuesday, 4.30pm at the Northern General Hospital. We have club chairs, coaches and volunteers who happily support new people arriving at our club.
