The last two days saw a busy weekend for the Sheffield Steelers and the start of a new event that we want to make a regular. On Saturday, Steelers hosted the first mini tournament for new players of the sport, invited from Yorkshire, and this can be extended. 12 people turned up to take the chance and experience game atmosphere. Divided into 3 teams and coached by some of our juniors, the teams played in a round robin 2 halves of 10 minutes each. Our very own John "Robbo" Robinson refereered, the table was officiated by Jo Harper and Maisie Waring.

All participants enjoyed the day, showed team spirit and learned new skills. We will keep you updated for the next round and hope to see increased participation. Thanks again to all helpers, in particular coaches Mark Schofield, Jack Waring and Harry Brown and the players who made this a success and feel good day!

The event was followed by Sunday's home games, with the third Div team facing the Lowriders before the first Div central and Superleague teams took on the Titans from London.

The third Div team, coached by Adrian Kennedy started off with a true nail biter. Only narrowly the Steelers team was leading by a few points, with minutes to go. Though the nerves seemed to get the better of the players as they continued to turn over the ball in the last 5 minutes. With only 1 second on the clock, leading by 1 point, Steelers committed a crucial foul that saw Lowriders sinking both their foul shots and winning the game. The disappointment was visible on Steelers faces and it seems the team will have to go back to the drawing board to work on game finishing and passing. End result 41 - 42 to Lowriders.

In the second match of the day, Steelers Div 1 central, coached by Paul Hudson met up with Titans. The first half was rather uneventful for the Steelers team, that heavily relied on the experience of Kevin Hayes and Steve Owen, going into half time narrowly behind the Titans. The third quarter saw the break for Steelers and taking the lead. All players contributed and took the game home to a win with 52 - 41.

The last game of the day was the one to watch. Our young Superleague squad, coached by Kevin Hayes faced Titans for the second time this season and were seeking revenge after a tough loss a couple of months ago. Steelers stormed into the first quarter, running excellent speed, defence and team play with George Bates making most of the points and getting Steelers in a 16 to 2 advantage. The Titans needed some time to catch up on this but Steelers never let go of the momentum throughout the game. Joe Caudwell dominated the defence and had a fantastic game, so did Richard Seargant and Harry Brown, the two point guards who controlled the pace and offence in the game, running fast breaks and outside threats. Steelers secured the win with confidence 58 - 45.

Sheffield Steelers bring home the Challenge Cup.

The Sheffield Steelers Superleague Team competed last weekend in the Challenge Cup, hosted in Milan, and won in a spectacular final game against Porto Torres.

The Steelers got off to a great start in Italy, opening their campaign with a five point victory over Le Cannet (75-70).

The team's second match proved to be a tougher affair as Sheffield went down 57-72 to GSD Porto Torres; however, demonstrating the fight that saw them qualify for the competition, the Steelers responded to their defeat by storming to a 68-30 victory over HB Torino, a truly fantastic game for GB contender Lee Manning who didn't miss a shot from the key in all the game, achieving a "double double" for the 3rd game in a row. He was ably assisted by 17 year old GB player, Harry Brown.

Their fantastic form continued, seeing the Sheffield-side first defeating Leopards de Guyenne 80-65, with the whole squad playing in this fabulous game, giving newcomer Joe Williams (aged 20) some valuable international experience, and seeing Mark Scholefield (17) return to form.

In the final, Sheffield Steelers avenged their only loss with a 74-68 gritty victory over GSD Porto Torres – overcoming a 48-52 deficit at the start of the 4th period, helped no doubt by Terry Bywater scoring 45 points in the game. This is a great return to form for the GB player who has spent the last 6 months recovering from injury. Bywater and GB veteran Kevin Hayes were voted in the all star five. The whole squad played fantastically well all weekend to bring home the Challenge Cup! The Steelers have now won 3 from 4 Euro Cup competitions in their 25th year of club history.

Steelers suffered two losses today on their home ground. The 3rd Division team, coached by Steve Ryan played their second game against the Carlisle Panthers and although battling hard against the experienced team, the young Steelers squad was not able to transform their shots into valuable points.

The Superleague team followed with a game versus Capital City, who are currently top of the league. Unfortunately the second game of the day did not show much improvement and Capital City pushed to a big gap in the first quarter with 21 to 6. Steelers never could recover from that and the second quarter was a simple repeat.
